Cedar Privacy Wall for Ultimate Boathouse Comfort

This custom-built cedar privacy wall was thoughtfully designed to enhance both the comfort and aesthetic appeal of a waterfront boathouse deck. Serving as more than just a functional barrier, the structure introduces warmth, texture, and a sense of refined enclosure – offering privacy without disconnecting you from the natural beauty of the surrounding environment. Its intentional design allows the space to remain open and breathable, while gently shielding it from wind, sun, and unwanted views.

Crafted from premium-grade cedar, the wall showcases the wood’s natural richness—featuring a clean, vertical board layout that complements the rhythm of the deck’s layout and the architectural lines of the boathouse itself. The cedar was selected not only for its visual impact but for its natural resistance to moisture, insects, and decay, making it an ideal material for waterfront applications. Over time, the cedar will age gracefully, developing a silver patina that blends seamlessly with the coastal setting unless sealed to preserve its golden warmth.

Engineered for both style and resilience, the wall is anchored by pressure-treated framing and corrosion-resistant hardware for long-term structural integrity. The proportions were carefully planned to balance openness with protection – providing just enough separation to create a sense of sanctuary without obstructing the deck’s airiness or views. Whether used as a backdrop for seating, a buffer from passing boat traffic, or a simple place to lean back in peace, this cedar privacy wall adds instant character and lasting comfort to the outdoor space.

Finished with thoughtful craftsmanship and timeless materiality, the project reflects Sunno Construction’s commitment to elevated outdoor living – transforming a beautiful boathouse deck into a truly personal retreat.

Project Objectives

The goal of this project was to craft a privacy feature that would enhance comfort, protect against the elements, and preserve the visual openness of the boathouse deck. The client wanted a structure that delivered seclusion without closing off the space – something that would feel organic to its environment while improving both usability and aesthetics.

The design had to strike a balance between durability and beauty, using materials that could withstand the unique challenges of a waterfront setting, such as humidity, wind exposure, and constant sunlight. The final structure also needed to integrate seamlessly with the existing deck and architecture -both in form and finish – while remaining low-maintenance and long-lasting.

Key project objectives included:

  • Create a privacy barrier that adds comfort without feeling bulky or obstructive.
  • Use natural cedar for its warmth, beauty, and proven resistance to moisture, insects, and decay.
  • Design the wall to complement the deck layout and blend harmoniously with the boathouse structure.
  • Provide shelter from wind and direct sun while still maintaining open sightlines and airflow.
  • Ensure strong structural support with pressure-treated framing and corrosion-resistant fasteners suitable for marine environments.
  • Allow for future aging or finishing options by using untreated cedar that can weather naturally or be sealed to retain its tone.
  • Deliver a clean, modern finish that reflects the simplicity and sophistication of the overall space.

The completed privacy wall successfully checked every box – offering privacy, beauty, and function in equal measure, and turning the boathouse deck into a more serene and versatile waterfront escape.
